Shaw healthcare chief ‘disappointed’ following CQC report

Chief operating officer Mike Smith has expressed his disappointment after Shaw healthcare’s Warmere Court in Arundel, West Sussex was rated Requires Improvement by the CQC.
The residential home, which serves up to 40 people, including those living with dementia, received its rating following a CQC inspection in July.
Mike said: “We are disappointed with the outcome. Additional training has been delivered to address areas that required support and more is scheduled to ensure we continue on our path of improvement. The many positive comments about the employees and care delivered shows we are making progress and we hope to return to a Good rating in the near future. Our plans have been shared with West Sussex County Council and the CQC, and we endeavour to provide a better service for our service users and families.”
While people were complimentary about the leadership and management of the home, which was described as “warm, welcoming and friendly”, the CQC said they were not always protected from the potential risk of harm, adding medicines were not always administered according to prescribing guidance. The report also highlighted that people requiring modified diets sometimes were given foods that could cause them harm, adding systems and processes did not always ensure people were protected from the risk of abuse. The CQC also highlighted a lack of oversight when a resident experienced unintentional weight loss. However, the regulator added that the home’s registered manager had taken immediate action to address concerns raised and ensure risk was minimised.
