Residents and staff face uncertain future following care home closure announcement

Residents and staff at an elderly care home are facing an uncertain future following the announcement of its closure.

Lauriston House, which is run by Larchwood Care, is to be closed by the end of December, following its owner’s sale of the home as a vacant possession.

A home spokesperson said: “We greatly regret that the home is closing and appreciate that this is a very difficult time for residents, families and staff.  The building is owned by a property company and has been sold with the buyer requiring vacant possession.

“We will work closely with social services, CCGs and others to support residents and their families to find alternative homes.  We will also work with employees and the GMB to support them in finding new employment.

“The closure is no reflection on the staff, who have worked tirelessly to raise standards and deliver high quality care.”

The move, which will affect the home’s 17 residents and 50 staff, was condemned by the GMB Union.

Mick Butler, GMB Officer, said: “The staff and residents of Lauriston – and their families –have now been left in limbo and are terrified for the future.

“This sell off highlights the problem with social care funding. Years of conservative cuts have left the sector at the mercy of faceless landlords who flog properties for profit with no care for the vulnerable people who will face eviction at short notice.

“How can it be right that older people no longer have anywhere to call home?  “
