Police probe widened into care home deaths

Police have widened a probe into the death of 13 residents at care home operator Sussex Health Care.

Twenty three people have now been interviewed under caution as part of a criminal investigation into nine care homes.

The 13 deaths have occurred since the launch of the initial probe into the care of 43 residents in 2017, the BBC reported.

Sussex Police said they were now focusing on whether there was any criminal liability in the 13 deaths. No evidence of criminal liability was found in the 30 remaining cases.

A spokesperson said police would keep residents’ families updated on developments.

Allegations include a care worker’s ill treatment or wilful neglect, failure to discharge general health and safety duty at work, and manslaughter by gross negligence.

Sussex Police said they were consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service although no prosecutions decisions had yet been made.

A Sussex Health Care spokesman said: “We have cooperated fully and openly with the police as part of their investigations and continue to do so. We are extremely pleased that 30 safeguarding cases were closed some time ago with no criminal findings.

“Where these investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
