Care home with ‘chaotic’ lunch time told to improve

A care home where a lunch time was described as “chaotic” with residents observed eating with their fingers has been rated Requires Improvement by the CQC.

Barchester Healthcare’s Badgeworth Court Care Centre in Cheltenham was rated Requires Improvement in four out of five categories and Good for Caring following an inspection in March.

Inspectors observed that a lunchtime in one of the home’s units was “chaotic” with people having to wait on the support they required.

People were served their meals at different times with two residents observed eating their mushroom stroganoff with their fingers.

Inspectors also noted that medicines were not always stored at correct temperatures.

While highlighting that improvements had been made at the service since its previous inspection in August 2017, when it was also rated Requires Improvement, the CQC said there had been some delay in addressing all its concerns related to staff changes.

A Barchester spokesperson said: “We take the findings of the Care Quality Commission very seriously and we recognise that changes need to be made in the home as the report identified. We have implemented a comprehensive plan clearly outlining the immediate steps being taken to ensure these improvements in our services are swiftly achieved.

“Extra training for staff is being provided on an ongoing basis and the home has employed new management and will continue to ensure staff receive the support they need. We would like to reassure everyone of our commitment to provide the highest quality of care to those living at Badgeworth Court and to emphasise that their health and wellbeing is at the forefront of everything we do.”
