Virtual dementia training helps care home provider to Outstanding hat rick

The innovative use of virtual dementia training has helped a South West care home provider achieve its third Outstanding.

Cannon Care Homes’ The Check House in Seaton, Devon followed Silverleigh in Axminster and Thornfield in Seaton in gaining the highest rating from the commission.

The CQC said: “Virtual dementia training was extended to include families of people living at the home and visiting healthcare professionals.

“This had a significant benefit to people living at the home as everyone involved in their care had a greater insight into the impact of living with dementia. For example, a staff member explained what they had learnt from a recent training session on dementia awareness, which was practical and experiential.”

The achievement means Cannon Care Homes now boasts a 100% Outstanding care home service with all three of its homes having gained the CQC’s top rating.

Owner Robin Cannon, said: “When my father passed away in 2009, I had to look at myself in the mirror and concluded that the care provided to my father by myself, my mother and my sisters was simply dreadful.

“Why? Because we continually failed to acknowledge he had dementia, and therefore everything we did fell very far short of what would have ensured his life was more comfortable. I determined at that point that my care homes would offer the very best in the provision of quality of life for those living with dementia in the South West. Full stop!”
