Previously ‘Good’ Bupa care home placed in Special Measures

A Bupa care home that was previously rated Good in all areas has been placed in Special Measures by the CQC.

Ashley Lodge care home in New Milton, Hampshire, was rated inadequate following an inspection by the CQC in May.

Inspectors said corridors and a dining room in the home were “dirty” with odours found in a downstairs toilet and a resident’s room.

A staff member at the home’s Oakview unit told the CQC: “We don’t get a regular cleaner, not every day. Maybe once or twice a week. The toilet’s a mess.”

Another team member at the unit complained of being “forgotten” and being understaffed.

Medicines at the service were also not managed safely, the CQC said.

Sarah Hedges, Regional Director for Bupa Care Services, said: “We’re taking this very seriously and we’ve introduced an improvement plan, led by a dedicated support team.

“We appointed an experienced home manager shortly before the inspection and she’s continued to have a good impact on the home. We’ve recruited more staff and increased training and activities, we’re also working hard to improve the housekeeping and cleaning. I’m confident we can get the home back to its previous high standards.”

Bupa said it had taken the decision to close its Oakview unit following the inspection.
