An inquest has heard how an 86-year-old woman plunged to her death from a care home roof after gaining access through a disused fire door with a faulty alarm.

Jean Herring was found on the ground outside Grosvenor Court in Margate, Kent shortly before midnight on January 28 (see Police investigate death following ‘tragic accident’ at care home), the Mirror reported.

The inquest heard Mrs Herring, who had Alzheimer’s, gained access to an upper ground floor through a fire door with an automatic alarm that failed to sound.

Carers mounted a search for Mrs Herring when she was discovered missing at around 8pm but she was not found until four hours later, shortly before the police were called.

The hearing was told the fire door’s alarm failure may have been due to a power cut earlier in the day, with managers being reportedly aware of an issue which was waiting to be fixed.

Speaking in January, a spokesperson for the home’s operator, Premiere Care, told CHP: “We regrettably can confirm that on 28 January 2019, Kent Police were called to The Grosvenor to investigate an incident and we confirm that a resident of our home was sadly found deceased. At this sad time, we would like to offer our thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

A post-mortem examination revealed Mrs Herring had suffered a serious head wound and died from multiple injuries.

The inquest has been adjourned to a date to be confirmed.
