Carer who dragged elderly woman by wrists and armpits struck off

A care home worker who dragged an elderly woman by her wrists and armpits has been removed from the register.

David Chambers was found to have brought his profession into disrepute during his employment at Beechwood Care Home in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire (pictured) between 25 July 2014 and 11 August 2017.

A Scottish Social Services Council found proven a number of allegations against Mr Chambers, including dragging an elderly resident by the wrists and armpits, tying a knot in her dressing gown so that she could not untie it, shouting at another resident and refusing to allow an elderly woman go to bed when she asked to.

The panel found Mr Chambers had brought the social care profession into disrepute and demonstrated a lack of compassion.

A Beechwood Care Home spokesperson said: “We are disgusted by the individual’s behaviour and sincerely apologise for the distress his actions have caused.

“This behaviour was completely out of line with our values and we fully support the decision to strike the individual in question from the register.

“As soon as we were made aware of the allegations we immediately suspended the individual and worked closely with the Scottish Social Services Council on their investigation. We have since completed an in-depth internal review into our reporting procedures and have reminded staff about the high standards our residents rightly expect and deserve.”
