Residents trapped in care home for weeks due to broken lift

Elderly residents have said they have been trapped in a Paignton care home for weeks due to a broken lift.

Dan Wilson told DevonLive that he had had to carry his 76-year-old mother-in-law, who is awaiting heart surgery, in and out of St Michael’s Court, which is operated by the Guinness Partnership.

Mr Wilson, said his mother had contracted a nose bleed due to the stress of being moved.

He added: “The lift is broken and it is her only means of getting in and out. Basically all the residents are house-bound.

“They have 38 vulnerable people there and some of them don’t have family nearby to see them. They are literally trapped.”

Mr Wilson said he had been asking for the problem to be fixed for four or five weeks but had been told by the home’s operator that they were still awaiting parts. He said he feared for the resident’s safety in the event of a fire.

A Guinness Partnership spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused by the fault with the lift.  New parts have been fitted and the lift is now working.”
