BREAKING NEWS: Planning Inspectorate backs council decision to block luxury retirement village

The Planning Inspectorate has backed a council’s decision to block plans for a luxury retirement village and nursing home in West Hampstead.

The Inspectorate’s decision was made following an appeal by LifeCare Residences over Camden Council’s decision to refuse its proposal for a retirement community in Gondar Gardens.

Nigel Sibley, Chief Executive of LifeCare Residences, told CHP: “We are very disappointed at the outcome of the planning appeal for our proposed retirement village and nursing home at Gondar Gardens. We are considering the reasons for the decision issued by the Planning Inspectorate in order to determine our next steps.”

Having established two sites in Dorset and Hampshire, LifeCare Residences launched its £108m Battersea Place retirement village and Albert Suites nursing home in 2016, which includes 103 apartments and a 28 suite nursing floor.

LifeCare Residences had proposed a similarly scaled development for the site in West Hampstead having bought the land almost three years ago.

Councillor Danny Beales, Cabinet Member for Investing in Communities and an Inclusive Economy at Camden Council, said: “Camden Council welcomes the Inspector’s decision, which is a clear endorsement of our position that the recent proposals for this site are completely unsuitable. They are not in accordance with the development plan and in particular fail to provide affordable housing that is much needed in the area – and that is not good enough for our residents. We would encourage the applicant to work closely with the council and the surrounding communities going forward to find a better proposal for this site which delivers for our community.”

The inspectorate’s decision came after the London Mayor’s Office blocked plans for a luxury retirement complex in Kensington and Chelsea in April (see Mayor of London’s office refuses luxury retirement complex plans).
