Care home provider fined £50,000 after worker injured in lift shaft fall

Woodbay Limited has been fined £50,000 after one of its employees suffered severe injuries after falling down a lift shaft at its care home in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire.
Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard an engineer had attended the lift on July 9 2015 and told the home’s director there was an issue with the access platform adding a screwdriver could be used to open the door of the lift.
An employee subsequently fell four metres to the ground down the shaft after attempting to enter the lift using a screwdriver when it had stopped between floors.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation led to a prohibition service being served on the operation of the lift by use of screwdriver to override the door locking mechanism.
HSE inspector, Russell Berry said: “This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.
“Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.”
Woodbay Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
