Care home provider says lessons have been learnt after resident dies following fall

The operators of a Derby care home have said “lessons have been learnt” following the tragic death of a resident following a fall.

Edith Bridgeford died in hospital on April 14, 2018 after suffering a fall at Firs Care Home on the same day, a court inquest was told.

Mrs Bridgeford, was found on the floor by now retired nurse Anne Steele, Derbyshire Live reported.

Ms Steele, who said “she wouldn’t have done anything different” if she was faced with the situation again, told the court she had given Mrs Bridgeford a thorough check over before putting her to bed.

Mrs Bridgeford, who was living with dementia, was taken to hospital five hours later after she began “screaming in pain”.

The home’s manager Katie Hoare said new measures had been put in place following the incident, including additional training for staff as well as new systems of care.

Ms Hoare also apologised to Mrs Bridgeford’s daughter in law and her husband for failing to contact them following the fall. The court heard that another family member had been contacted despite the fact that the couple had dealt with Mrs Bridgeford’s financial affairs and had visited the home frequently.

The court concluded that Mrs Bridgeford had died from a combination of natural causes and her fall.

A spokesperson for Ashmere Care Homes said “lessons have been learned” from the tragic incident.
