Care home under council investigation threatened with closure by CQC

A care home that is being investigated by Luton Borough Council has been threatened with closure by the CQC.

In its latest inspection report the CQC said it would begin the process pf preventing Runwood Homes from running Mulberry Court within the next six months if insufficient improvement has been made.

The home is currently being investigated by the council over the treatment of an 87 year old man.

The CQC said people’s experience of the home was “poor” adding there had been “substantiated concerns” from the local council over neglect and acts of omission.

Concerns were highlighted over people at risk of falls, those who were underweight and those who needed certain medicines.

The home was criticised for its lack if activities and events and was described as looking “tired and uncared for”.

Commenting on Mulberry Court, chief operating officer Gavin O’Hare-Connolly, said: “We have very rapidly put in place processes to ensure that the same standard of dignity that we see across our organisation are realised within that home.”

He added that a “very clear and robust action plan” had been given to Luton Council and a new senior management team had been installed and was engaged with specialists in turning around services.

“There have been failings there and we must accept that – however, we are working very hard to put that right,” he said.

Gavin said he was confident the service would not be closed down.
