A former HC-One carer has been struck off for causing physical and emotional harm to residents.
Christy Jamieson was removed from the register by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) after it heard allegations relating to his employment at Merino Court Nursing Home in Greenock.
Addressing Mr Jamieson, the SSSC said: “Your behaviour amounted to an abuse of power and trust in relation to vulnerable elderly people.”
If found that the former care worker’s action has caused “actual physical harm” and “emotional harm” to residents.
The SSSC characterised the position of Mr Jamieson, who did not attend the hearing, as essentially one of “denial”, although he had admitted acting “inappropriately”.
The panel found a catalogue of allegations against Mr Jamieson proved. These included pinching a resident on the nose in an attempt to make him swallow, telling a resident who was shouting for their family, “they are not coming to see you”, smacking a resident on her arm and telling a colleague he “could not be arsed” to give a resident a shower.
Mr Jamieson was also found to have on multiple occasions wet the hair of residents to make it appear as though they had showered.
An HC-One spokesperson said: “The behaviour of this individual goes against the principles of compassion, kindness and dignity that we pride ourselves on as an organisation and staff team.
“At the time of the incident in 2016, the individual in question was suspended and later left our employment. We strongly support the SSSC in ensuring care workers in Scotland meet the highest standards.
“Since the incident, Merino Court has twice been rated ‘Very Good’ by the Care Inspectorate (August 2017; June 2018) underlining that our staff team is committed to delivering the kindest possible care to all of our residents. We also receive regular positive feedback from residents and relatives, with the home being rated 9.7/10 on the independent comparison website www.carehome.co.uk
