A carer who was filmed eating a resident’s food has been jailed for 10 months.

Joan Barrett was filmed eating 89-year-old Joyce Curtis’s apple pie and custard at Redholme Memory Care nursing home in Mossley Hill, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

Redholme’s owner and manager Ann McCann told the Mirror she was “devastated” by Ms Barnett’s actions.

“To have a member of staff abuse our residents and our trust has been shocking,” Ms McCann said.

The video footage, which was taken on a mobile phone by the carer’s colleague Demi Dooley, shows  Ms Barnett licking her lips after finishing the resident’s pudding. The court heard how Ms Barnett then completed a form reporting Ms Curtis had eaten her meal.

The footage also showed Ms Barnett giving Ms Curtis, who has Alzheimer’s and who has since died, a “violent push to the head”.

Ms Dooley said Ms Barnett has also manhandled a 54-year-old with early onsite dementia in the home’s shower.

In passing judgement, Recorder David Swinnerton, said Ms Barnett had “abused a position of great trust” and was a “bad apple” in a good nursing home.

He added: “You were employed as a carer, but what you provided was an utter travesty of care – it showed no care at all.”
