Couple who stole £30k from care home resident given suspended jail sentence

A married couple have been handed suspended jail sentences after admitting stealing £30,000 from a care home resident.

Robert Miller, who worked as a cook and in other roles at Heaton Grange Care Home in Bradford, was given a two-year suspended sentence for theft and fraud, and his wife, Susan, the home’s manager, received a four-month suspended jail term for the theft of £3,000, the BBC reported.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Mr Miller had stolen money from a resident, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease, to fund his gambling.

Mrs Miller was found to have tried to cover up the theft by repaying £3,000.

Judge Colin Burn said Mr Miller had misled the resident’s family, who live in Canada, into believing he was involved in the home’s management.

The judge said Mrs Miller had attempted to put the family “off the scent” when they began making enquiries into the resident’s financial affairs.

Mrs Miller’s barrister Oliver Jarvis said she was “embarrassed, ashamed and deeply sorry” about her involvement in the fraud.

Mr Miller’s sentence was suspended for two years and he was ordered to do 300 hours unpaid community work with Mrs Miller’s sentence suspended for a year.
