Damning report issued on Aberdeen care home set to close

A damning inspection report has been published on an Aberdeen care home that is set to close.

Four Seasons announced last month it planned to close Banks O’Dee home after it was issued with a warning by the Care Inspectorate.

In its latest report, the Care Inspectorate revealed it had witnessed one resident being wheeled from the show to their bedroom on a commode who was only partially dressed with a towel covering their groin.

A relative told inspectors their loved one had spent 14 hours in bed as no staff were available to assist them.

The regulator added that some people went for prolonged periods without staff being present or with no interactions.

Relatives told inspectors they participated in a lot of their relative’s care which they sometimes resented having to do but felt they had to do as staff were too busy.

A spokesman for Four Seasons said: “We have been concerned for some time that the home has not been meeting the standards that we expect our homes to provide and that the Care Inspectorate requires. The operational challenges have been exacerbated by difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff with the right skills in the tight local jobs market.

“This has necessitated high use of temporary agency staff who, although they are appropriately qualified, are not familiar with our policies and procedures and do not know the residents as well as our permanent staff. We take very seriously our responsibilities as a care provider and we think ceasing to operate the home is the right thing to do rather than see it continue to struggle.”
