DoH orders independent review of Runwood Homes’ Dunmurry Manor

The Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Ireland has ordered an independent review of Runwood Homes’ Dunmurry Manor.

The move follows an investigation into historical abuse at the home by the Commissioner for Older People, some of whose findings were disputed by the regulator and Runwood Homes.

A DoH spokesperson said: “As the Permanent Secretary has made clear, the Department of Health takes very seriously the issues which have emerged from Dunmurry Manor.

“This independent review, which we have commissioned CPEA to carry-out, will give us a clear picture of how these care failings came about and, crucially, how we can put systems in place to prevent them occurring again.”

The review will investigate how the health authorities responded to issues at the home and look at what lessons can be learned from the failings.

In a recent statement, Runwood Homes’ CEO Gordon Sanders criticised he Commissioner’s report as “flawed and inaccurate”, while apologising to the victims of what he described as “historic” and “isolated” incidents at the service (see Row erupts over Dunmurry Manor care home inquiry).
