EXCLUSIVE: St Helens’ care home’s success provides ‘antidote’ to poor care

A manager of an ‘outstanding’ care home in St Helens has said it has provided an “antidote” to poor services in the region.

Parr Care Home in Merseyside joined the top 3% of adult social care services following an inspection in November.

Registered manager Colleen Blaney told CHP: “Some homes in St Helens have failed to reach minimum standards. Our success has provided an antidote to that.

“We always do our best to provide the best care and are always aspiring to be the best.”

The recognition marked the second time the home has achieved the CQC’s top rating. Its previous outstanding was achieved under its former operator in 2016.

Ms Blaney told CHP changes to the CQC’s ratings had made achieving outstanding even more difficult the second time around.

The registered manager said the home’s workforce was its strength, adding her policy of delegating responsibility through nominating champions in specialist areas had “worked really well”.

The CQC said: “Staff were allocated the roles of champions to maintain up to date information in many aspects of their role to ensure that people received the care and support they needed in maintaining their health, dignity and privacy.”

Inspectors added that staff were “highly motivated to provide care which was personal, kind and compassionate” and praised Ms Blaney for her “outstanding leadership”.
