HC-One care home told to improve for third time

Callands Care Home in Warrington, Cheshire, has been told to improve for the third consecutive time by the CQC.

The home, which accommodates up to 120 people across five units, was found to be in breach of regulations in relation to ‘need for consent’ and ‘good governance’ following an inspection in May.

The CQC said: “The overall quality and safety of care people received had not improved since the last inspection. Quality assurance measures were not effectively in place. Processes and systems to assess and monitor the provision of care being delivered were not routinely completed, audits and checks were not identifying areas of improvement and the overall governance of care being delivered was inconsistent.”

In further comments, the regulator said insufficient numbers of maintenance staff had impacted the provision of care and staff were not supported with effective, learning and/or development opportunities.

An HC-One spokesperson said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents are our top priorities and we take all feedback from the Care Quality Commission very seriously.

“We are pleased the report rated the home ‘Good’ for ‘Caring’, describing our colleagues as ‘kind’ and ‘considerate’, and we acknowledge there are some other areas we need to work on.

“To do this we have implemented a comprehensive action plan which includes colleagues working closely with our learning and development team to make sure they have the skills and knowledge needed to consistently provide the right care.

“The home is being actively supported by our wider regional team and together we are working closely with our local partners and everyone connected to the home to make and sustain improvements. We are confident of demonstrating these improvements at our next review.”
