High tech table transforms dementia care in Cornwall

A high tech table is helping transform the lives of people living with dementia at Cornwall Care’s The Green care home in Redruth.

The £7,000 ‘Mobii’ projection system is designed to stimulate movement, construction and mental activity.

Chief Executive Anne Thomas said: “We are delighted that our residents at The Green are already gaining so much from this wonderful technology. Supporting people to have meaningful and stimulating interaction is an important part of what we do and we will continue to embrace new ways of enriching the lives and experience of everyone in our care.”

The motion-activated unit, which features more than 300 apps, quizzes and activities, projects on to tables, beds and floors, using motion sensors to turn them into interactive surfaces controlled by touching, swiping and splatting.

Mobii, supplied by OM Interactive, won the Pioneers in Technology award at this year’s Dementia Care & Nursing Home Expo, and the runner-up award in Most Outstanding Contribution to Dementia Care.

Sam Tatum, Care Manager of The Green, said: “We look after people with complex dementia and mental health needs and to see our residents using the new system and working together is so heart-warming.

“The Mobii is amazing, it is really great for co-ordination, for reminiscence and as a good social tool. The response we have had from our residents has been fantastic and to see them working together made me quite emotional.

“We have a couple of residents who we nurse from their beds and as the unit is mobile, we can actually project it onto their beds and play music for them.”
