Care UK, Yorkare and Sunrise Senior Living UK and Gracewell Healthcare were among the winners of the NASHiCS Safety in Care Awards 2019.
Care UK won the Best Practice Certificate for its efforts to boost fire safety across its 120 homes.
Head of Health & Safety Richard Price said: “I am very proud of the hard work the wider team within the organisation have put into improving fire safety compliance and I am also very proud that the senior team at Care UK understood and was prepared to take on the investment and enormous commitment, recognising the importance of leading from the front.
“The NASHiCS Awards are the highest accolade in our sector’s profession and I was very proud to represent my team and Care UK to receive its congratulations for our commitment to resident and colleagues safety.”
Yorkare (pictured) took the Highly Commended prize in the Best Practice category for its purchase of a number of Dechoker devices for each of its homes. The Dechoker was used by care assistant Jodie Smith to save a resident’s life.
Registered manager Nicole Rands said: “We are delighted to have won this award, a big thank you to NASHICS. Also a huge well done to Jodie, we are all so proud of you!”
Matt Oakley of Dechoker said: “It is fantastic to see Yorkare recognised for their proactive approach to improving resident safety, especially where DeChoker has been able to support them in achieving this. The fact that our equipment proved so beneficial and in such a short space of time I hope will focus some attention on the significant issues faced in managing choking risks in the sector.”
Other winners were: Shonagh Methven, Head of Health and Safety, United Response (Individual of the Year); and Sunrise Senior Living UK and Gracewell Healthcare (Learning and Training).
Chris Jackson, National Chair for NASHiCS, said: “Congratulations to our winners. We received a very impressive set of nominations this year, highlighting some high-quality and thought-provoking initiatives and it is encouraging that so many providers are taking responsibility for developing new, efficient approaches to managing health and safety.”
