New care home to replace demolished council building in Perth

A Scottish council building that had been lying empty for two years has been demolished to allow for the construction of a new 80-bed care home.

The home, in Perth, will be built by developers Simply UK on the site of the Atrium Building, after approval was given by the local council for the demolition earlier this summer, The Courier reported.

The construction will come as a welcome development to many residents, after Simply UK found last year that out of 381 beds spread across five residential facilities in Perth, only five were available.

Moreover, the city saw Beechgrove House Care Home, a council run facility that had 18 beds, close in August last year.

The new premises will include an additional wing, but will otherwise be similar to the demolished building, and is expected to create 20 new jobs in the first year.

Simply UK’s director of care, Linda Meston, told The Courier: “The community were very positive and supportive of this development and the service that it will provide.”

Planning officers said of the development: “The council will support developments supporting housing for particular needs, such as housing for the frail, elderly or special needs where they are located within residential areas with good access to services.”
