Perth care home ordered to make urgent improvements

Balhousie North Inch and North Grove Care Home has been ordered to make urgent improvements by the end of this month following an inspection in August.

The home, which is split between North Inch, which offers residential care for the elderly, and North Grove Care Home, which provides specialist dementia care, was rated Weak in all categories following an inspection by the Care Inspectorate.

The regulator highlighted people’s concerns around staffing levels as well as management within the home and activities.

People reported contrasting experiences of meal times at the two  units, with one described as “relaxed, sociable and pleasant” and the other “chaotic and confusing”, leading to some residents having very little to eat or drink.

Having recently switched to an electronic planning system, inspectors noted that recordings of people’s food and drink intake were “incomplete and unsafe”.

Residents were observed with long finger and toe nails and staff revealed that some hospital appointments had been missed due to transport not being arranged in time.

The regulator also noted that medication was not managed effectively.

A spokesperson for Balhousie Care Group said: “We have been working for some time now to address certain service aspects of our North Inch care home. The team we have in place has been rigorous and hands-on in implementing a long-term strategy which has the support and input of the local authority, staff, residents and families, and industry bodies. The care of our residents is our highest priority both at North Inch and throughout Balhousie Care Group.”
