Plaid Cymru care commission urges free social care for all

A care commission set up by Plaid Cymru has stressed the need for all social care in Wales to be free at the point of need.

It detailed how providing services free of charge was “eminently affordable but it needs the political will to make it happen”.

According to a BBC News report, it is expected that the party will turn the idea into party policy for 2021.

The news comes after the party released a consultation paper on social care this week.

Speaking at the launch event, Helen Mary Assembly Member, said: “It took courage to set up the NHS. It will take courage to ensure social care is free at the point of need. Time to take down the barriers between health and care. Time to finish what Aneurin Bevan started.”

The commission estimated that delivering the policy would cost £247m a year and recommended that the funding should come from general taxation.

The sum equates to less than 1.5% of the Welsh Government’s annual budget.

The BBC report went on to detail how last year, economist Prof Gerald Holtham said an increase of between 1% and 3% could be used to fund elderly social care in Wales.
