Prime Minister hopeful Jeremy Hunt admits social cuts went too far

Former Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has admitted that government cuts to adult social care have gone too far.

Mr Hunt, who is one of the four remaining candidates to become the next Prime Minister, made the admission during an interview with BBC Radio 4.

The current Foreign Secretary said: “I am happy to accept, as I do having been responsible for the health and social care system, that we didn’t put enough money into social care.”

In its latest analysis, the Institute of Fiscal Studies revealed that overall spending on local councils fell by 21% between 2009-10 and 2017-18. Spending on adult social care fell by 5% over the same period.

The tragic human consequences of the cuts were graphically illustrated by the BBC’s Crisis in Care documentary which chronicled Somerset Council’s struggles to meet the care needs of its most vulnerable people.

Mr Hunt, who was Health Secretary between 2012 and 2018, added: “As the Health Secretary who was looking at hospital beds full of people who should have been discharged but there were no places in the social care system for them to go to … I think that the social care cuts went too far.”

Indicating that he had a “solution” for the social care crisis, the Prime Minister hopeful elaborated that he thought local authorities needed more money and that people needed to save more for their own social care costs.
