Resident-led refurb enriches lives at Somerset Care home

A resident-led refurbishment at Somerset Care’s Fletcher House in Wells has brought a new spark to a key communal space.

The make-over was designed to improve the Avalon Suite and provide residents with a stimulating and enriching environment, which from a dementia perspective can play a huge role in helping to reduce triggers and promote positive behaviours. The makeover also incorporated a new calm and tranquil zone within the suite to assist those who enjoy suitable reflective or personal space.

Trudy Bower, manager at Fletcher House, was pleased to welcome Mayor, John Osborne, to celebrate the reopening of the suite.

Trudy said: “Creating bright and engaging environments for residents is crucial to overall wellbeing. Residents were heavily involved throughout, choosing colour schemes and wall art. They even helped to choose the furniture, which has since been rearranged to encourage social interaction and create a homely environment.”

Residents and guests enjoyed the afternoon’s celebrations and entertainment. The newly launched hydration trolley was doing the rounds enabling residents to sample a range of refreshments as a way to promote and encourage consistent hydration and the wider benefits this brings.

The mayor was also joined by the local Dementia Alliance representative, Philip Welsh, who was pleased to offer his support to Fletcher House, who offer both residential and specialist care for those living with dementia.
