Shaw healthcare to open first council care home in Liverpool for 25 years

Shaw healthcare will open the first council commissioned care home in 25 years in Liverpool this week.

The £8m Brushwood home is part of a multi-million project to meet dementia care demand in the city (see Work begins on multi-million pound dementia care hubs in Liverpool). A second home, Millvina House, will open next month.

Mayor of London, Joe Anderson, said: “The decision to invest in these two new purpose-built care homes that will offer residential and dementia beds and carer respite is part of our invest to save strategy and will help ease pressure on other, more costly parts of the health service such as hospital beds and save the public purse money.”

Brushwood will provide 68 beds, 48 of which will be for long term care, including nursing and general residential care, with the remaining allocated for assessment.

Shaw healthcare has signed up to the Liverpool Social Value Charter and is paying its workforce above the National Living Wage while providing specialist training in safeguarding and dementia awareness.

Partnerships with local colleges and training organisations have enabled the care provider to recruit around 80% of staff from the local area with almost a quarter of the workforce previously unemployed.
