STATE OF CARE: Leaders call for action as CQC lays bare fragile social care system

Care leaders have called for government action after the CQC laid bare the fragile state of the social care system.
The latest State of Care report reveals a sector facing a perfect storm of funding, workforce and capacity challenges.
Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England, (pictured) said: “CQC’s annual report, State of Care, identifies workforce and inadequate funding as major concerns and echoes the sector’s call for a long term strategic plan for adult social care.
“The regulator recognises providers that have seized the initiative and attempted to work in a different way to head off the impending crisis and asks that Parliament, local authorities and commissioners support them. Moreover, the report only accentuates the fact that the government cannot side-line social care reform for any longer. The risks of further inaction are too grave.”
Nadra Ahmed, executive chairman of the National Care Association, said the fact that 84% of social care providers were Good or Outstanding despite the challenges they face was testament to the dedication of their workforce and their investment.
“The report has highlighted some of the challenges and we hope that commissioners and indeed government will take note and commit to creating solutions in partnership with the professionals who deliver such exceptional services,” Nadra said.
VODG chief executive Dr Rhidian Hughes said the CQC’s report highlighted the “precarious financial state of the social care sector and the growing demands placed on it”.
Dr Hughes said a “tipping point” had been reached adding it was time for the CQC’s remit to be extended to include full independent performance assessments of local health and social care commissioning.
Mike Padgham, chair of the Independent Care Group, said: “This latest report again reveals a social care sector that is fragile and in need of help.
“This government or the next one after a general election will have to grasp the nettle or the number of people currently living without the care they need will continue to grow and that is a scandal.”
