Sun sets on Sunrise care home’s nursing wing

Staffing issues have forced Sunrise Senior Living to announce the closure of a nursing wing at its Sunrise of Cardiff care home.

Nineteen residents at the home have been given 30 days’ notice to find alternative accommodation after Sunrise said it was ending its nursing services.

A Sunrise spokesperson said: “Following a review of our current nursing provision, and taking into account the significant challenges we are facing in the recruitment of nurses, it is with great regret that we are withdrawing our own in-house nursing provision.

“This means that the local district nurse will be providing nursing support at the community, an arrangement which already works well at many of our other communities. However, sadly we do have 19 nursing care residents whose more intensive needs will now be better met elsewhere in Cardiff.”

Sunrise said it was working closely with residents and their families on finding alternative accommodation, with nine people already having been rehoused.

The spokesperson said it was working with the University Health Board to ensure any residents who had not been rehoused within the deadline could continue to receive nursing care at Sunrise of Cardiff until alternative accommodation was found.

Councillor Joe Boyle, meanwhile, called for Sunrise to offer residents more time to find new homes.

“Sunrise needs to rescind the decision and provide a much more reasonable period of notice,” Cllr Boyle told Wales Online.
