Two care homes to close after cross-party protest falls short

Two Gloucestershire care homes will close for good after the attempts of a cross-party group of councillors to save them fell short. 

Gloucestershire County Council had originally chosen to close Stroud-based Wyatt House and Southfield care homes in July as a result of falling demand and outdated dementia facilities.

The ruling was “called in” by five councillors from the cross party group due to concerns over the consultation process and the decision was reviewed by the Adult Social Care and Communities Scrutiny Committee.

Concerns stemmed from the council giving Wyatt House and Southfield House residents and staff just 48 hours’ notice about the closures.

However, during a meeting on Tuesday, members of the Scrutiny Committee voted six to three to back the closures.

The chair of the scrutiny committee, Cllr Stephen Hirst, said: “We carefully reviewed the process that had been undertaken and after much discussion, in which all committee members had the opportunity to contribute, committee members voted on whether they supported or opposed the grounds for call in.

“Three councillors supported the grounds for call in, whilst six councillors opposed. This means that the decision made at the Cabinet meeting on 24 July is upheld and the care homes will close.”

A 12-week consultation regarding the impact of the closures on residents and relatives will be carried out imminently by the council’s adult social care team.

This follows meetings that have previously taken place with families, and gives residents and their loved ones further opportunity to raise potential effects the move will have on them individually, the council said.
